The Austin Stairlift Company Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the difference between AC and DC power?

DC powered stairlifts have rechargeable batteries. AC powered stairlifts are powered by the household electrical supply. Most modern stair lifts are DC powered. They are quieter, smoother and will continue to operate during a power outage.

2. Does the stair lift attach to the wall or the staircase?

The stairlift rail is fixed to the staircase treads in four places, along the length of the stairs.

3. What is the weight capacity?

The standard weight capacity is 308 lbs. We can also supply a heavy-duty stairlift that can comfortably accommodate 350lbs.

4. How long do the batteries last?

Our constant charging system means that the battery life expectancy is about 4 years with normal use. The 2 batteries used are common off-the-shelf items, that cost around $50 a pair.

5. Does Medicare cover the cost of a stair lift?

Unfortunately not, at this time. However, we can advise you on a number of other financing options. Please call us for details.

6. After placing an order, how long before the stair lift is installed?

Being in the Austin Area, we can install your new stairlift very quickly – and always within 5 days. In emergency situations, we offer same day service, if required.

7. Where can I see a stair lift, before buying one?

We offer a no obligation, free in-home demonstration of a fully functioning stair lift to all of our Austin customers. Simply call us to make a convenient appointment.

8. Is my staircase wide enough?

This is very, very rarely an issue. Our stairlift will operate on a staircase that is as little as 26” wide (almost unheard of in this area). Naturally, we are happy to visit you without obligation and make a full assessment of your stairs to insure that they are suitable for a stair lift.

9. My staircase is not a straight run. Is that a problem?

Not usually – you have a couple of options with ‘L’ and ‘U’ shaped staircases.

We offer stair lifts to cover all but the most unusual staircase shapes. Please call us to discuss your requirements.

10. How much does a stair lift cost?

In order to furnish you with a quotation, we really do need to see the staircase and assess your needs and wishes. Typically, the installed price of a straight run stairlift is between $3000 and $3900. However, this information is intended only as a rough guideline. Please call us to discuss pricing in more detail.
